GLASS MANUFACTURER
TAKES BEAD ON QUICK TRUCK TURNAROUND

Storage and truck unloading problems led a glass bead manufacturer in the mid-South to review its packaging system. Historically, the beads were poured into large upright bulk bags with handles on the top surface for handling. "The bags required a great deal of storage space since they could not be stacked," according to Drew Graham, president of Hardy-Built Systems.

Filled bags were then leaded on a truck, a single layer high and transported to its fabricating plant in Tennessee. Upon arriving, the bags were unloaded with some difficulty. The beads had settled in the bags, creating a wedging effect across each row, and making it hard to remove them. Graham compared it to trying to remove the first olive from the olive jar. There were times when the removal became so difficult that a bag would be broken, spilling beads all over the floor, which creates a safety hazard and puts a temporary halt to the unloading process.

With the main customer being a dedicated fabrication plant, the single delivery location made a closed loop system a good idea. "We designed a four-sided open crate affixed to a small pallet (the footprint size of the bag) using our HB-Angle Plates on all four sides," said Graham.

Three sides are assembled to the pallet, the bag inserted, and then the 4th side assembled. The crate with the bag on the inside is then transported to the filling station, filled and closed, and stacked awaiting shipment to the fabrication plant. The bin design allows for stacking containers on top of each other, easier loading of the beads, and a more rigid container that had no tendency to lean or roll over. This translated into quicker and easier unloading due to the elimination of the wedging effect.
